How to protect your system from Freezing

Winter checklist: 5 critical inspection points for your industrial cooling system

With the arrival of cold weather, the risk of freezing in industrial cooling systems becomes an issue that can have direct consequences on production continuity. Pipes, heat exchangers, valves, and other exposed components can suffer significant damage if the system is not properly prepared for low temperatures.

Freezing, however, rarely poses a sudden and unpredictable problem. More often than not, it reveals vulnerabilities that already exist in the system, such as an inadequate concentration of antifreeze, incomplete drainage, an unprotected component, or control logic that has not been properly verified.

Furthermore, the financial impact of a freeze event rarely stops at the cost of a damaged component; a compromised circuit cascades into lost cooling capacity, unplanned facility downtime, emergency labor, and secondary production disruption.

To safeguard operational continuity before the first frost, facility managers must audit 5 critical operational factors:

  1. Coolant & Antifreeze protection: verifying glycol concentration and overall fluid condition.
  2. Exposure & Thermal insulation: inspecting exposed piping, dead zones, and degraded insulation.
  3. Circuit drainage: confirming complete water evacuation in drainable and self-draining systems.
  4. Active protections: functional testing of electric heating elements and recirculation pumps.
  5. Control & Power supply: testing sensors, alarms, setpoints, antifreeze logic, and power redundancy during outages.
The real question isn't how cold it will get, but which body parts are at risk of frostbite.

Effective protection therefore stems from an assessment of the system as a whole: exposure, fluids, geometry, operating conditions, and available protective measures must be considered as elements of the same strategy.

In an industrial setting where every hour of downtime has a significant economic impact, the ability to anticipate problems is one of the key distinguishing features of an advanced production system.
