FINALLY, AN ALTERNATIVE TO COOLING TOWERS
Frigel’s New Ecodry saves processors money, eliminates frustrations
and helps the environment
LAKE ZURICH, Ill. – Frigel introduces an alternative to cooling towers with its closed-loop fluid cooler technology called the Ecodry System. Ideal in any climate, the Ecodry provides relief from constant cooling tower maintenance and greatly reduces energy and water consumption, helping the environment and the bottom line.
“The Ecodry is a proven product that is very new to this market and very different than what our industry is used to,” said Steve Petrakis, president of Frigel North America. “This revolutionary system is changing facilities and operations for the better everywhere it gets installed.”
The Ecodry operates by pumping the water returning from the process into heat exchangers and cooling it with ambient air flow. This closed-loop process provides clean water at the right temperature to process machines year round.
To maintain water below setpoint in hot weather, outside air passes through an “adiabatic chamber” before reaching the heat exchanger. Water, via misters, is “pulsed” into the chamber, and humidified air drops the water temperature at or below the setpoint. To ensure consistent cooling, the control panel continuously adjusts the amount of water sprayed. During colder months, the Ecodry has a fully-automatic, self-draining system that protects it from freezing and also provides “free” cooling when ambient air temperatures permit.
“We were using a conventional tower system like most industries do,” said Steve Streff, president of SK Plastics, and a Frigel customer. “The Ecodry made a lot of sense from the standpoint of energy and water savings, longevity and temperature control. We’ve been just as satisfied as can be with it.”
The most popular version of the Ecodry, the EDG Series, features fans with variable speed DC brushless motors. This allows the unit to conserve energy, permits quieter operation, increases durability and generates 30 percent less power consumption. The EDG Series is available in 13 sizes with cooling capacities ranging from 17 to 340 tons. These modular units can be combined to create systems up to 1,000 tons of capacity or more.
The Ecodry operates using an advanced microprocessor featuring an easy-to-use, remote interface for monitoring temperature, operating parameters and alarms. These sophisticated controls adjust fan speed, initiate adiabatic functions, control the free-cooling valve and maintain pumping stations. It takes into account real-time ambient temperature and adjusts the Ecodry’s operation accordingly to keep it running using the most efficient method possible, all without any input needed from an operator.
Frigel has been a market leader around the world in process cooling since the 1960s. Foremost among Frigel’s revolutionary products is Ecodry, a unique, closed-loop cooling system that’s been proven at more than 5,000 manufacturing installations worldwide. The Ecodry is a unique, closed-loop, system that dramatically reduces water use and keeps cooling water clean. Coupled with the break through, cycle time improving Microgel, the result is substantial savings on water, chemicals, energy and maintenance. Simply put, in process cooling, this changes everything.
